Description
Mt. Charleston, in the Spring Mountains Recreation Area overlooking Las Vegas, NV, is within a "sky island". This incredibly rich desert landscape is so high in the sky, it's ecosystem is distinct from the surrounding lower-lying desert. I love this concept of a sky island. On a day that was (for Vegas) a cool 90 F on the desert floor, we hiked Mt. Charleston where the daytime high hit 70.
